Mediumship

Mediumship:  A practice in which a person who acts as an intermediary between the physical world and the spiritual world. Spiritualism is a philosophical way of life. The spiritualist's objective is to offer proof, through mediumship, of the survival of the human personality after physical death.

"I yearn for the expression of the holy spirit working within me. For this love and understanding, truth and justice, for wisdom to know the false from the real that I may alleviate sufferings. God is love, understanding, wisdom and virtue. Let us love one another, let us practice mercy and forgiveness, let us have peace, born of compassion. Let our joy be of ultruist living, of doing good to others. Happiness is unto them from whom happiness proceeds". Baha'i prayer

Mediums, also known as "Channelers" are people who are sensitive enough to sense or see spirit. By communicating with those who have departed is a way to prove survival of the personality / mind of the person after physical death. Most religions teach that there is an afterlife. Spiritualism proves the continued existence of life, on a different plane, separate but able to communicate. This is a source of comfort to those who grieve? When a loved one continues to speak to you, albeit through a medium, the pain of loss is lessened or, perhaps, soothed away completely.

Mediums are able to work together with higher spirits, to bring inspiring and educationally enlightening messages to fellow human beings. They are also able to serve as instruments for discarnate spirits who wish to leave messages for loved ones who are left behind. By putting selfish interests aside and working humbly and compassionately for the benefit of others, mediums are able to, over time, heal the wounds of our soul.

A sitting or reading with a Sensitive / Medium is an experimental process and such, results cannot be guaranteed. However a good reading, in whatever format, should consist of accurate information and facts that can be verified in the present or in the future.

"All mediumship is limited to it's capacity for reception. We cannot receive
more then we are capable of understanding and assimilating"
Maurice Barbanell

Mediumship can be expressed in a number of different ways

  • Clairvoyance - (from the 17th century French with 'Clair' meaning "clear" and voyance meaning "vision") with the minds eye see objects, spirit, images, symbols. colours or "Auras" (energy around the persons body), these usually flash into a persons mind.
  • Clairaudience - hear spirit sounds not audible consciously (term used often of "Hearing Voices").
  • Clairsentience - sense/ feel spirit. feelings of emotional energy
  • Clairscent - (clear smelling) smell a fragrance or odor coming from spirit.
  • Clairempathy - (clear emotion) sense or feel within one's self the attitude or emotions of another person.
  • Clairgustance - (clear tasting) discern the essence of a substance through taste from spirit.
  • Clairtangency - (clear touching) this is commonly known as Psychometry. By holding an object or touching an area you perceive information about the article or its or owner's history.
  • A physical Mediumship is where the sitter can see or hear for them selves the sounds or physical manifestation of those who have departed whatever known to the sitter or not.

Mental mediumship is by far the most common form of contemporary mediumship. Mental mediums see, hear or sense Spirit and relay their impressions to sitters. Mental mediums may operate in a fully conscious state in which they are in control of both their words and actions, or in various degrees of trance, where a Spirit entity speaks through the Medium. In most cases the trance state is light enough for the medium to remain conscious of what is being said through his/her vocal cords

Physical Mediumship is not as common today as it was in Victorian times and the early twentieth century. The types of Physical phenomenon usually encountered are Transfiguration, Ectoplasm, Voice Trumpets, Materialisation and Apports.

Materialisation: Can occur where the spirit can be seen, and sometimes touched, by those present.  This type of communication is very rare and should not be confused with ghosts or apparitions.

Transfiguration: Here the face of a spirit person can be seen formed over the mediums face. The faces can be very clear at times, with the mediums face completely disappearing.

Direct Voice: Objects called trumpets are used for this type of communication, they are conical shaped objects with holes at both ends.  The trumpet is placed in the centre of the circle of people present, when the atmosphere is right for spirit they will make the trumpet float in the air and use it for communication. The sound is created from an artificial throat box formed from ectoplasm and comes from the pointed end of the trumpet.

Trance: This form of mediumship allows the spirit to control the mediums body for communication. This could mean using not only the voice box but also moving various parts of the body. There are various stages of trance from slight over shadowing to full deep trance where the medium seems to be asleep. Whilst in trance the medium will be aware of spirit around them, and will communicate all that is told to them without interaction of their own thoughts.

Claircognisance: Literally means "Clear Knowing". It explains the ability to know something without knowing how that something is known. People who are sensitive to energies often have the feeling that a message or situation is  either "right" or "wrong".

Apports: An Apport is a physical object bought through by spirit usually to the group of people sitting for communication. The objects can be almost anything from flowers, books, they just happen during a séance .

  • A Psychic from the Greek "psychikos" meaning "of the Soul", also called a sensitive, is a person who perceives information hidden from the normal senses or through extrasensory perception (ESP) also known as the "sixth sense or intuition".

Other psychic / tools for divination and other phenomena:

Psychometry: The term “Psychometry” is believed to have been first used and  promoted in the mid-nineteenth century by American psychologist, Joseph R. Buchanan. The term is used to describe hidden “vibrations” contained in physical objects. These vibrations can be read by mediums and psychics to tell a particular history about each object and the things and people associated with them.

Psychokinesis is the process of moving or otherwise affecting physical objects by the mind only, without making any physical contact.

Psychic art is an artistic work that is produced with or without the conscious knowledge of the individual producing the artwork and involves a spiritual energy influence. Psychic artists are able to sketch or paint people in the Spirit world who are then recognised by sitters. Psychic artists usually accompany their drawings with some information about the person.

Automatic writing may be considered a form of mental mediumship. This varies from the subject consciously writing his/her spiritual impressions through to trance state in which spirit takes control of the subject’s hand, with or without his/her knowledge of the process.

Astral ProjectionAlso known as an “Out of Body Experience” or an OBE. The experience involves being separated from one’s physical body and travelling through space and time.

The tarot (first known as tarocchi, also tarock and similar names), is a pack of cards (most commonly numbering 78), used from the mid-15th century in various parts of Europe, used by mystics and occultists for divination and as a map for mental and spiritual pathways by way of interpreting the "spread of Cards". As well as other card publications such as Angel Cards, Psi Cards, Trust Your Vibes cards, The Phoenix Cards etc., and all are a valid means of divination.

Runes: The “Runes” were an ancient Norse and Germanic Alphabet which was based on magic symbols. The runes were used to predict future events, to heal and for many other purposes but mostly to do with invoking change. The original Runic System in about the 1st Century AD comprised a series of small wooden tablets.
